Overview of CSMC Doctoral Programs

 

Three CSMC institutions (Michigan State University, University of Missouri, Western Michigan University) have PhD programs in mathematics education and offer doctoral fellows a specialization in mathematics curriculum design, development, evaluation, and research. Faculty and fellows across CSMC meet regularly to collaborate on course development, research, and program improvement. For specific information about each of these doctoral programs, see:

CSMC doctoral students:

  • study mathematics education courses on curriculum issues and trends, development and evaluation, and research.
  • take coursework to develop a broad base of knowledge needed by mathematics education professionals who work in university, school district, or state department of education settings.
  • collaborate with university and school partners on a program of research to better understand curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • conduct independent research related to mathematics curriculum with advice from Center faculty.
  • teach university classes under the direction of a faculty mentor.

Who should apply?
Individuals with an interest in research, development, implementation, and evaluation centered on mathematics curriculum. Entering PhD students should have a strong mathematics background and commitment to scholarship in mathematics education. They should also have K-12 or other teaching experience.

What financial support is available?
CSMC Doctoral Fellows receive a graduate assistantship, tuition waiver, fringe benefits, office space and computer, and professional travel support. Additionally, they receive a scholarship each year contingent on acceptable progress toward graduation and contribution to the work of the Center.
